Are You Suffering from Warped Brake Discs?

Posted on: 6 June 2022

To slow down your car as effectively as possible, you need to make sure that the brake system fitted to each corner of the vehicle works correctly. The system is tuned so that a similar amount of force is applied to each of these corners, so the vehicle can slow down safely and without any deviation from its intended path. So, what can happen if you get an issue with one of these corners, and what should you do in this case?

How Brakes Should Work

Most modern-day vehicles have a disc brake system, as this is felt to be the most efficient solution available. You'll find a rotary disc attached to the hub on each corner and which sits within a brake caliper. Inside that caliper are a pair of friction pads that are pushed onto the disc's surface whenever you touch the brake pedal. This action will cause the disc to slow down and, as it is securely attached to the road wheel, will also bring your vehicle to a halt.

Overheating and Warping

Issues can arise if you overuse the brakes. This can happen if you drive very quickly and may need to apply extra pressure to the pedal frequently. This will cause the brake disc to get very hot and could lead to some degradation. If you get into the habit of resting your foot on the brake pedal when driving down steep hills, this can also cause the brake discs to heat up with the potential loss of performance. Indeed, when a disc reaches a certain temperature, it may begin to warp so that the surface is no longer as smooth as it was. However, this type of failure is inconsistent and may only affect one corner of the vehicle at a time.

Signs of an Issue

Should a disc warp in this way, the brake pads will not work as intended. They will not be able to adhere to the surface of the disc as they once did, and it will take a lot longer for the vehicle to slow down as a consequence. You may also notice that the car tends to pull sharply to one side during heavy braking, and this is another side that your brake disc may need repair.

Taking Quick Action

If you come across these issues, do not delay. Get in touch with a mechanic as soon as possible so that they can repair or replace the offending part. If you need a car repair, schedule an appointment with an auto shop in your area.

Automotive Action: A Guide

Hi! My name is Lisa and I would like to invite you to read my new automotive blog. I own a small car which I use to drive around town. Last year, I realised that I needed to gain a better understanding of the various maintenance task I would need to complete in order to keep my car on the road. I also wanted to learn how to better accessorise my car so it looks really cool. Thankfully, I made a good friend who is a mechanic. He advised me on all of this and I learnt a lot. I hope you like my blog.
